2012 Recap: Home & DIY

This is probably the category that I had the most fun with this year, for pretty obvious reasons.

I mean, we moved.

Transitioning from a fourth-floor walkup that we pretended was a two-bedroom but was actually a one-bedroom with a hallway that was slightly wider in one spot (and that had a toilet in the kitchen and a bathtub where the closet should have been; how weird is that?) to a for-real home was right up there with marrying Kendrick and having Indy in the most exciting moments of my life.

Tip Of The Day: Keep Potatoes From Browning

My biggest must-do when it comes to entertaining is to get as much busywork done in advance as humanly possible.

Brussels sprout-trimming, lemon-zesting, potato-peeling...everything that can get done beforehand does get done beforehand. It's a habit I picked up back in the days of no counter space, no dishwasher and a mini stove; preparing a multi-course meal all at once at once not only wasn't fun...it usually wasn't even an option.

In any case, I think we can all agree that peeling potatoes is a semi-miserable task. If, like me, you prefer to get it out of the way in advance, here's a little tip: just submerge the spuds in a bowl of cold water to keep them from browning until you're ready to get going.

Entertaining

Small Spaces And Holiday Entertaining

But despite the fact that our previous apartments were less-than-ideal for hosting parties, we've always done a lot of entertaining (that's the aftermath of last year's New Year's Eve party, pictured above)...and I like to think we've actually become something approaching "expert" when it comes to small space fiestas.
