My Looks

Weekend Uniform, Lately

What I wore all weekend: a look that's hinting at the fact that I'm getting excited for fall clothing (hats! silky button-downs! brown leather!) but still light enough for midsummer.

(Mostly excited about the hat. I bought it at Anthropologie last fall, decided for some reason to store it on a hidden shelf in my closet, and completely forgot I owned it until two weeks ago when I rediscovered it and glued it to my head.)

How To Wash Your Hair (The Right Way)

I know, I know...how to wash your hair? Uhhh...with water? But the fact is that there are a few simple things that you can do to take your morning routine to the next level, leaving you with more manageable hair than ever.

While we're on the topic: last night I hosted a Hair Love 101 Twitter Party, and the most-asked question was how to handle your hair when it's crazy hot and humid out. That's my big issue, too: my hair frizzes easily, and bangs (I'm growing mine out for the fall) and humidity do not mix. My solution: to keep my hair as generally healthy as possible (because I've found that the healthier my hair is, the better it looks in its natural state), and then to work with it rather than against it, applying frizz-fighting products (my favorite is Dove Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum*) and then letting it do as it will.

My Looks

Maxed Out

It's so hot these days.

It has been all summer, actually. I don't know what's going on on the East Coast lately, but honestly: it feels like living in the tropics, what with the constant thunderstorms (the rain deposited another huge branch in our yard last night), ten thousand percent humidity and general mugginess.

It's the kind of hot that makes me give up. There's no point in wearing makeup; it slides right off. There's no point in blow-drying my hair; my bangs do the weird thing that they do within seconds, and the only solution is to tuck them away. There's no point in getting dressed; having anything but air conditioned air on my skin feels miserable.

Except...although nudity may be de rigueur in some towns, it might make my neighbors think I'm weird, and we already have enough of that.

Style

My Kinda LWD

There's something very pretty and feminine and perfectly summery about a little white dress. I wore this one at an Elle shoot last month, actually...but then once I was dressed and the cameras were rolling (meaning that outfit changes were no longer an option) I realized that I felt weird and uncomfortable and remembered that I don't usually love wearing dresses, little and white or no. Occasionally, sure...but they're just not usually what I feel best in.

I'm almost always much, much happier in something that I can run around in. Get down on the grass in. Do a cartwheel in if I want to.

Something like a pair of shorts.
