April Showers Bring…Overalls

I've always had a thing for overalls, but it's more of a thing in theory than an actual thing. It's just so damn hard to find a pair that looks like...you know, like you're intentionally wearing overalls as opposed to "oops I was painting my house and forgot to change before coming over for dinner." I have this one pair from ninth grade that I drag out every once in awhile, put on, and then usually take right off again because they sort of look like I made a mistake.

Yesterday's rain made me grumpy, but you know what made me less grumpy? The arrival at my home of the most perfect overalls everrrr. These are slim-fitting but not super-tight, are a little '70s without feeling costume-y, and have slightly cropped legs that help out enormously when you're confronted with those April showers (no wet hems, hooray!). They make quite the springtime uniform, I think.

Oh, and you know where I picked up the rest of the outfit, which completely coincidentally happens to be the same brand as the overalls? At the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale that's happening over on Fifth Avenue right now. (Seriously, it's a total coincidence; I wasn't trying to do Minkoff From Head To Toe, it just happened.) I try to make it every year, because it is so good - and a great place to pick up spectacular Christmas presents at a spectacular price. You can find sample bags and shoes for fifty bucks (!), and about halfway through the run of the sale they do huge markdowns. Just FYI. (You should go.)

Major Restorative Moment: The New Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa

nexxus salon new york

Talk about a not-terrible way to spend an evening.

You may have noticed I’m a little hair-obsessed lately; I just love this new cut so much, and am especially excited about the fact that (so far, at least) it appears that if I keep my hair healthy I don’t really have to do a whole lot to it on a day-to-day basis (which is AWESOME, because hello: no time). So when given the opportunity to take a little field trip down to the Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa for a restorative hair treatment and styling…I mean:

Yes.

The Dawning Of The Season Of The Sun

FINALLY.

You know how the fact that it is FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY actual-spring (as opposed to calendar-spring, which coincided with a for-real snowstorm in my neck of the woods) makes me feel?

Like doing a little dance. (I'm dancing in that picture up there, I swear. See the jazz hand?)

The New Swim Silhouette

For the past couple of years, swimwear has been all retro shapes and high waists and bralets. I love this because high waists and supportive tops are both good things, especially for we thirtysomethings who have procreated, but I've also kind of Taylor Swifted out of the look. It's just so ubiquitous, and every time I see yet another girl in a black-and-white checkered bikini bottom cut up to their belly button "Shake It Off" starts playing in my head. I like that song, but I'm sort of over it.

Just like I'm over '40s-style bathing suits.

And apparently swimwear designers agree with me, because everywhere I turn I see a completely new silhouette: long sleeves, cropped tops, and high necks. It's inspired by surfer-wear, but while some of these suits are clearly intended to be worn while doing full-on water sports, others are more "here I am lounging on the beach in my fabulously chic suit." I kind of love it: the silhouette is definitely sexy, but the element of modesty feels more refreshing than showing tons of skin. And I especially love that you could totally do stuff in these suits - frolic, et cetera - and not have something like this happen to you (oh god).
