This is my view in the morning, right when I wake up.
It makes getting out of bed a lot easier, I have to say. But I still require a few more things in order to truly jumpstart my day:
- Coffee (obviously);
- Carnation Instant Breakfast (don't ask; just try it - it is like the nectar of the gods and I cannot stop drinking it);
- A quick splash with cold water;
- A few minutes (or, more realistically, between thirty and forty-five seconds) to myself to spend on my skincare routine. When I was twenty I could just run out wearing the remnants of last night's makeup and look, if not especially elegant, at least semi-human, but now? I need my forty-five seconds to spend on myself, and I need my moisturizer.
In short: attending to the state of my skin is no longer an option; it's an essential part of my morning (and night).
Blogging, Books, Startup Collaborations & Cross-Country Moves with Kids
Do you know, I've never done a podcast before? It's really fun: it feels strangely informal and intimate, and 20 minutes in you kind of forget you're being recorded for broadcast and start telling stories that you didn't exactly mean to tell.
(Click here to listen to my episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast, in which we talk how to make a living as a blogger, cross-country road trips with babies, and why I am really, really not even a tiny bit like Kate Middleton.)
When Is It “Time”?
Q. Jordan,
My husband and I have been married a year now, own a house, have a dog and a cat. I'm approaching 30 next summer. Our lives are primed for a child, but we've both been a bit ambivalent about deciding to go for it because everything in life is so good and peaceful right now. Maybe we're subconsciously thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
There have been times in the past when I've been super baby hungry, but always when I knew I was nowhere near ready in terms of lifestyle. I know I want a child or two eventually, just not sure I want to start right now. But of course, there's the whole biological clock thing ticking away....
Bad New Yorker
Erin and I were making pizzas for dinner the other day and she said, "Oh, we should use the extra dough to make calzones for lunch tomorrow." And when I replied, all offhand-like, "Sure, that sounds good. I've never had one before," there was this long silence, and I looked over to see Erin staring at me like I had just burst out into a rousing rendition of "Don't Rain On My Parade."
So apparently never having eaten a calzone is kind of strange. And apparently it's extremely strange for someone who spent the bulk of her life living in various New York City apartments, all of which were located approximately ten feet away from a pizza place (or three).
(If we're being totally honest here, I'm not even sure I could have told you what a calzone looks like. I had a vague impression of it being lumpy and bready with...something or another inside, but I think that's also a decent description of a gyro, a.k.a. another thing that I couldn't have described very well even upon pain of death until five minutes ago, when I googled it. And since we're tangentially on the topic of gyros, I also feel that it's important to let you know that up until the age of twelve I confused the word "gyro" with the word "orgy," which means that I had an extremely skewed interpretation of that photo of a woman eating a meat-filled sandwichy-thing that's posted on the door of every Italian to-go place in New York.)
In The Land Of Fairies
Isn't this photo a dream?!
My friend Elise (the owner of the children's boutique where we threw the glam | camp launch event on Saturday) held a birthday party for her 6-year-old daughter this weekend, and it was so gorgeously done I had to ask her if I could take a few shots to show you. I love this whole setup for a little girl's party, of course, but with a few little tweaks it would also make for a beautiful bridal or baby shower.

The Big Stock-Up
For someone who has objectively quite a lot of clothing, I spend a bizarre amount of time standing in front of my closet feeling like I have nothing to wear. Because while I own plenty of cool stuff that's fun to put on when I feel like getting all dressed up, what I actually wear on a day-to-day basis are basics in neutral colors - striped tees, grey sweaters, black pants or jeans. But since I have a limited number of these items, what happens is I wear the same four or five shirts and the same two or three bottoms over and over and over and over until finally they're completely falling apart.
Which brings me to the fact that fall is a great time to stock up on basics: those things that you should always have sitting in your closet because they're what you'll really wear. A perfect sweater, jeans you can live in, a comfortable pair of boots, a button-down plaid shirt, etc. What I'm wearing here are a few wear-everywhere-everyday basics from JCPenney: a great pair of grey combat boots, a striped tee (with a twist, so it's not boring; I love those dropped sleeves), and cropped, stretchy black pants that feel like pajamas but are cute enough to wear out at night.

OHHH.
Making pizza is EASY.
I had no idea.
