In The Evening (Dress)…

Nighttime (meaning cocktail- or black-tie-requiring) events at nearly seven months' pregnant can be tricky.

I try to avoid picking up big-ticket maternity items, since I don't see the point of spending a ton of money on a piece that will  only be wearable for a couple of months…but formalwear presents a bit of a conundrum. When I was about this pregnant with Indy three summers ago, we went to a wedding and I didn't really plan in advance, figuring that I'd just yank some black dress with a bunch of stretch in it out of my closet and be done, but when I went to try on those stretchy black dresses: nope. Not even close. (I ended up wearing a high-waisted maxi that I had bought at a discount store in Canada with the intent of wearing it to my baby shower.)

Recalling this incident, I actually thought ahead for the Yale SOM spring formal and sifted through my closet in search of potential candidates a good week ahead of time…and was pretty excited to discover that two of my all-time favorite evening pieces - my neon BCBG dress (which I also own in pink, because I love it that much) and my retro-looking swing coat, both which are on my Favorites List mostly because they are super-floaty and comfortable whether pregnant or not - are both cut in a way that totally accommodates my new shape.

Teeny-Tiny Earrings For Your Second (And Third, And Fourth) Holes

You may have noticed I'm very into extra ear piercings lately. I first got a whole bunch when I was in high school, then let them close up…and then re-pierced them all over the last year or so. Right now, I have three holes in my left ear, two holes in my right, and a cartilage piercing on my upper left (plus a belly-button piercing from 1996 that's persistently uninterested in closing up despite the fact that I haven't had anything in it in a good decade).

Love them. Want more. Next up (after the baby arrives, and next time I get a chance to visit Los Angeles): a tiny stud in my tragus (which is much less pornographic than it sounds; it's the little area that projects out in front of your ear canal) and a couple more hoops in each ear. I'll probably also throw another tattoo or two on there, just for fun (and because when your family expands seems like a good time to add some commemoration in ink form).

Why do I love these extra ear piercings so much? Because I think that if you choose the right earrings for your extra piercings, they're elegant while still being (just a little bit) unexpected. What I wear are super-small, super-slim continuous (i.e. no ball closure) gold hoops that I had custom-made at Body Electric in Los Angeles - if you give them a call and describe what you want, you can have them shipped to you, but if you'd like to swap yours out every so often (or just wear tiny, adorable earrings in your regular holes), oh my goodness are there ever some cute options out there.

Eat

Microwave S’Mores

We've had our fire pit (which I managed to sorrrrt of reassemble post-tree-collision so that it functions while I figure out whether or not to buy a new one) for two years now, and have never made s'mores. This felt like something we needed to fix.

The only problem: as a city girl who genuinely loves camping but is completely at a loss when it comes to edible things and campfires (my hamburgers, without fail, end up being flipped right into the coals)…I'm not very good at making them. I basically just burn the marshmallows and call it a day. On the positive side, however, s'mores are good even when they're not especially good.

On The Off Days

One of my blogger friends, Jessica, recently put up a post on Instagram asking her readers if they'd also like to see what she wears on her "off" days - meaning her not-technically-post-worthy days - and the resounding answer (and my own answer)  was "YES". Because while I enjoy using style blogs for inspiration on days when I want to dial it up a little, or to figure out how other women handle tricky looks that I'd like to try out myself…to me, what's more important than looking great on my "on" days is finding ways to look great on my "off" days.

Which is, to be honest, kind of…all of them. Or at least a solid 90% of them.

I do occasionally put up shots here of what I wear on more "special" occasions - a TV appearance, a night out with girlfriends, an evening event - but for the most part, my personal style posts feature the kinds of looks that I'm "really" wearing on a day-to-day basis; my "off" days are my days. My goal isn't to blow anyone out of the water with impeccable, cutting-edge, carefully-crafted looks - because I virtually never ever ever have time to do any "crafting" when I'm trying to get out of the house in the morning; we're talking ten minutes to get dressed, max - but rather to show how if you have the right basic pieces and a few fun accessories, crafting might not even be necessary.

Weekend Snapshots: Mother’s Day Edition

Isn't this INCREDIBLE? Saturday morning we took a walk, and scenes like this were all over. After a few months of not being especially enthusiastic about living in this part of the world, what with the sub-zero temperatures, insane blizzards, getting snowed in practically every week and all…our town is busy making me fall in love with it all over again. It's just so gorgeous.

If you're in the NYC area, I highly suggest you come up for a day trip sometime (ideas for how what to do are here). Maybe next weekend, while these cherry blossoms (or are they apple blossoms?) are still hanging around.

Last-Minute Mother’s Day Gifts

Did you completely forget about Mother's Day? That's OK; you still have 24 hours, and 24 hours is more than enough time to make Mom something that if she does not love, she might very well not be a human being: chocolate-dipped fruit with fancy salt. (Click here for instructions.)

Another easy DIY: pick up some mason jars and a few herbs, and make her a gorgeous windowsill garden (either hanging or not) of her very own. (Click here for instructions.)

Go For The Gold (Makeup)

Spring means a lot of things. It means my hammock reappears in our backyard (this weekend this weekend!), that I start eating potato salad in truly amazing quantities, and that I am something other than "miserable" on the trip from bed to shower in the morning.

The truth is that I'm a little nervous about this particular spring because every notch that the thermostat ticks up means we're that much closer to summer, which means we're that much closer to Deadlines One and Two (both of which I'm so, so excited about, and also more than a little anxious about)…but mostly I'm just SUPER FREAKING HAPPY IT'S NOT COLD ANYMORE. Because that winter was straight-up terrible, and if you're on the East Coast you know what I'm talking about

Something else that Spring means: I get back into gold.
