Memory (or “First Knuckle”) Rings At Every Price

Memory rings (also known as "midi rings" and "first knuckle rings") are one of my absolute favorite accessories - I wear them every single day of my life, no matter how casual or fancy I'm being, and love how they're simultaneously elegant and a little edgy. They were super-trendy for awhile, but at this point I think they've transcended being a "thing" and have become just another category of accessory - meaning that while you can find them for next-to-nothing, they're not necessarily a bad place to lay out a little extra money for a piece you'll have forever.

To me, memory rings (which are called that because you can use them to remember to-dos, transferring them from one hand to another when the task has been completed) fall into three basic price categories (I'm ignoring the ones on the $200+ end of the spectrum, because while they're very pretty it's also not necessarily especially practical to spend that kind of money on a ring that honestly might fall off your finger at some point; I've had a lot of luck with mine and even sleep in my rings without them slipping off, but you never know).

My Looks

Rainbow Brite

For our last day in Florida, I thought I'd dress up like a rainbow.

I rarely wear super-bright colors - and even more rarely wear a whole bunch of them at once - but I was inspired by my rainbow jelly sandals and the presence of palm trees to get crazy with it.

Purple bag, orange shorts, chartreuse cardigan, turquoise belt and jewelry...why not? To me, this look works because while the colors are all bright, they're also all the same kind of bright (vibrant and jewel-toned), because all of the pieces are simple shapes, and because everything is centered around a single neutral piece (that grey tank).

The Cookery: Dobbs Ferry

When I first started blogging a few years ago I was over on Tumblr, a platform that lent itself to much shorter, more diary-style posts ("Here I am at sushi! Here is the shirt I bought! Here is my dog!" et cetera). And so I did a lot of blogging about local spots I went to. If I went to a restaurant and ate something, it probably ended up getting posted on my site.

I don't really do that anymore, mostly because I don't want to bore non-Westchester-or-NYC readers, but every so often I discover a place that I need to let you know about.

Kendrick's been telling me about The Cookery, in Dobbs Ferry (a short MetroNorth ride from Grand Central, if you're based in NYC) and how we haaaave to gooooo for a few months now, ever since a friend took him there. On Sunday we got the chance to stop in for brunch, and:

Fuzzy Wuzzy Was A Chameleon

Kendrick thinks that what happens to my hair in the presence of humidity is really funny.

So much so that he had me pose for a photo while pretending that I was in a 1980s Mentos ad.

It's true: I turn into a lioness in the presence of even a single atom of moisture; always have. In years past, the fluffball on top of my head has made me nuts; nowadays...less so. And this is partially because I really do try to keep my hair in good condition these days (because healthy hair = less frizzy hair), but also because of motherhood.

Buca di Beppo Meatballs

I know next-to-nothing about Sofia Vergara, and still: I cannot help but think she is wonderful. She wears ridiculous sequin dresses, is rarely pictured without a glass of champagne and doing some crazy dance move in an era when stars try to cultivate a photo-perfect image at all times, and she and Julie Bowen posed for the this send-up of Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield:

That is an amazing photo.

She has to be wonderful.

My Looks

Some Romantic Evening

I've owned this dress for a couple of years now, and I love it so much, and yet this is the second time I have ever worn it. Because while I'm usually all for wearing whatever you want wherever you want, and generally pay very little attention to things like dress codes and occasions...this dress is pretty specific. It kind of demands to be worn in close proximity to palm trees.

It's such a romantic dress, but also surprisingly easy - almost like wearing nothing at all - which meant I wanted to keep the rest of the look simple: gold hoops, Grecian-inspired jelly sandals that are both the most comfortable things ever and super cute (they were my favorites all summer long last year, and it looks like this year will be the same), and my very stylish Club Med wristband. That's it.
