One Anorak, Three Ways

I'm going to have to add one more item to my list of easy (and affordable) updates for your autumn wardrobe: an olive-green anorak. It's such an easy piece to toss over leather leggings and jeans...but my favorite way to wear it is with a gauzy floral mini (yes, in the fall; this is how you do it) and clogs.

(OK...the "dress" I'm wearing in that center shot is actually a "blouse" - I picked it up back when I was eight months pregnant to wear with jeans - but tomayto tomahto.)

Some suggestions pour vous at a wide range of prices (my favorites have a zip-out lining so you can wear them all the way through until full-on winter and a furry hood).

Stand Up And Do It

A few weeks ago, Kendrick was telling me how he was working on a group project at school and the question of who would present the project in front of their entire class came up, and - without even thinking - he said "I will." And I thought that was the coolest thing, to have your default setting when it comes to public speaking be "Sure, I can handle that," to just have faith in your ability...and then go get it done.

I used to struggle - a lot - with stage fright. When I was working as an actress, the problem became so bad that it was actually crippling - I had to tailor my wardrobe to cover up shaking knees or a flushed neck, and once had an anxiety attack so extreme that I had to physically walk out of an audition with Jada Pinkett Smith, saying "I can't do this" - and was a big part of why, after awhile, acting stopped being something that made me happy. When you have an enormous physical response that frequently stands smack in between you and your ability to get hired for a job and make a living, you eventually start thinking that maybe you need to do something different.

So when I say that it's "exciting" to be able to speak on panels, give presentations, stand up in front of a really lot of people and just talk, I mean much more than "Oh, what a cool experience." I mean that too, of course - it is cool, very cool - but even more I mean that there was this thing that used to be so much a part of my world that it cast huge shadows over my career, my future, my life...and the discovery that getting up on a stage wasn't just something that I could learn how to "handle," but something I could actually learn how to enjoy...

I suppose I just find that kind of incredible. The fact that, in time, we can move past even those things that feel impossible. Evolve.

ENTREES

Skillet Chicken & Potatoes

There are two especially great things about this recipe, which is based on one that I spotted in People awhile back (I tore the page out and carried it around in my purse for weeks because it looked so good that I didn't want to forget to make it):

1) It requires about ten minutes of hands-on work and exactly one pot's worth of cleanup, making it great for busy weeknights;

2) It costs about $12 (and easily feeds 4). And that's only if you go for the fancy, organic chicken.

DIY Projects

DIY Black Glitter Table

I own a weird number of small side and end tables for three reasons:

1. When I was in college, my parents inexplicably developed a habit of buying me tables as presents (during my freshman year they brought one with them nearly every time they visited, perhaps fearing that a lack of surface areas upon which to rest my books would leave me vulnerable to things like not-studying and keg stands)

2. The Upper East Side, where Kendrick and I used to live, is a treasure trove of discarded furniture on weekend mornings, and we went through a phase where we frequently dragged pieces up to our apartment for a little rehab;

3. I like them. Maybe it's genetic.

Last-Chance Pumpkin Patch

Alright, this is it: your official last weekend to get into the Halloween spirit. If you've been procrastinating on the whole "pumpkin" thing...well, I hear you: I haven't carved one this year either, mostly because I hate carving pumpkins. But I have been to a pumpkin patch - that's one part of the season that I refuse to miss out on.

If you're in the NYC area, you have to check out Harvest Moon Orchard - it's about an hour outside Manhattan, in North Salem N.Y., and totally worth a Zipcar rental. They have a big pumpkin field with lots of heirloom varieties, live music, bouncy castles, farm animals, an adorable country store, and turkey legs (which are obviously worth the trip alone).

It's so much fun.

Mom’s Banana Bread

My mother's banana bread is my default Thing To Make whenever I throw a party or find myself in need of a hostess gift. It's quick, it's easy, and - best part - it can be personalized with the addition of things like nuts and Nutella. My mom has had this recipe for years - decades, I think; it's written down on a little index card in a box that she's had since high school - and it's never failed me (other than once, when I accidentally undercooked it and ended up with banana bread on the outside and banana soup on the inside; don't do that).

What you need:

1/2 cup softened butter

If A Pumpkin Were A Living Room

For today's edition of free-association fun, let's talk pumpkins and living rooms.

I've never really been into those weird, bumpy, twisty-looking pumpkins - they always look creepy and diseased to me; I'll go for classic round-and-orange, thanks. But these sage-and-rose gourds that I spotted at the pumpkin patch last weekend (more on this tomorrow, because if you haven't been yet this weekend is your last chance) were so pretty that I was tempted to pick up the whole lot for my front porch.

I didn't, because weird and twisty pumpkins are also weirdly and twistily expensive, but I kept thinking about those colors, and how much I love the pairing in the home. If you add in dark wood and gold accents, what you end up with is kind of a 1970s Palm Springs resort mixed with a glitzy ski lodge kind of look...

Free Download: She, Her & I

By now, you know my beautiful, talented friend Francesca (above left). She's in a vintage-meets-modern jazz/gypsy swing band called She, Her & I, and to celebrate the release of their first single, "Everybody Loves My Baby," they're offering it as a free download for a limited time here (just scroll down and enter your email address where prompted). Enjoy!

P.S. If you like what you hear and are in the L.A. area, their next gig is at the Sofitel on November 5.
