My Looks

Maxed Out

It's so hot these days.

It has been all summer, actually. I don't know what's going on on the East Coast lately, but honestly: it feels like living in the tropics, what with the constant thunderstorms (the rain deposited another huge branch in our yard last night), ten thousand percent humidity and general mugginess.

It's the kind of hot that makes me give up. There's no point in wearing makeup; it slides right off. There's no point in blow-drying my hair; my bangs do the weird thing that they do within seconds, and the only solution is to tuck them away. There's no point in getting dressed; having anything but air conditioned air on my skin feels miserable.

Except...although nudity may be de rigueur in some towns, it might make my neighbors think I'm weird, and we already have enough of that.

Style

My Kinda LWD

There's something very pretty and feminine and perfectly summery about a little white dress. I wore this one at an Elle shoot last month, actually...but then once I was dressed and the cameras were rolling (meaning that outfit changes were no longer an option) I realized that I felt weird and uncomfortable and remembered that I don't usually love wearing dresses, little and white or no. Occasionally, sure...but they're just not usually what I feel best in.

I'm almost always much, much happier in something that I can run around in. Get down on the grass in. Do a cartwheel in if I want to.

Something like a pair of shorts.

Birth Announcements by Naavale Designs

Naavale Designs (whose illustrations you might recognize from my book announcement post, and who is working with me on a brand-new logo for the Ramshackle Glam site redesign - coming soon) has just launched an adorable line of baby announcement story cards.

The unique, customized designs (two of my favorites are pictured above) allow you to go beyond the standard name/date/weight info - you get to share exactly what you want, whether that's the birth story, the meaning behind the baby's name, or something unique about the day he or she was born - and can be printed out at home or shared online. All you have to do is email the info via the Etsy order form, and you'll receive a preview in 2-3 days (and then a hi-res, ready-to-print file upon approval).

Check out the full line here.

Ogunquit, Maine Must-Dos

For those of you still planning your summer vacation, I very enthusiastically recommend that you give Ogunquit a shot - I honestly think it's just the most perfect summer town ever, and has something for everyone (carnivals, antiquing, gorgeous beaches, great food, fishing, et cetera). It's pretty busy on summer weekends, but if you can steal away during the week you'll find better prices on hotel rooms and shorter lines at restaurants.

Keep It Simple

So far, our week in Maine has been fantastic. We’ve made turtle sand-pies at the beach, hung out at the pool, eaten way too many lobster rolls and steamed clams, and slept until after 8AM (!) each day thanks to the fact that we’re all staying in the same hotel room, which means that our son basically stands up in his crib staring at us until around 10PM, when he finally decides that the party is over and it’s time to lay down. Late-to-bed doesn't necessarily equate to late-to-rise with toddlers...but between the heat and the ocean air and THE SEAGULLS (each and every sighting results in enthusiastic-bordering-on-frantic pointing), all of us are sleeping a little longer and a little more deeply than usual.

It’s a little tricky, this staying-in-the-same-room thing. We haven't done it since we moved - a day that coincided exactly with the very first day that our son slept through the night - and it means that we more or less hold ourselves to our son's schedule. I certainly don’t mind this; I'm on vacation to sleep and to read Stephen King books, not to hit the clurrrb...but the fact that we’re limited to doing fun stuff during the hours when he’s awake also means that we don't want to spend a single second more than necessary in the room getting ready.

Which translates to keeping things simple.
