New Use For An Old Thing: Silverware Organizer

I'm pretty proud of my kitchen drawers.

They're the one storage area in the house that's actually the size we need it to be, and - against all odds - I've managed to keep them relatively organized...mostly because every inch of them is filled with things that divide and conquer all the mess, like teacups, salt bowls, baby food jars, and silverware organizers. I have a silverware organizer in both drawers, actually - even the one that doesn't hold silverware - because they're just so handy for arranging smallish items like serving utensils, bibs, pens, and tape dispensers.

But the uses for silverware organizers (like the pretty one pictured above) don't end in the kitchen! No no. Want to see?!

How-To: Get Your Pose On

Q. Hey Jordan,

Big fan of your blog here with a question for you.

I look like a complete goober in any sort of formal posed photographs. I mean I really can't take a good picture to save my life, especially when it's a full body shot - where do I put my arms? My feet??

I have an event coming up that's going to involve a LOT of posed photos, and I was wondering if you could do a little expert tutorial on how not to look either a) super stiff or b) like some sort of limb-flailing octopus, which are my two go-tos.

Links & Love & Stuff

I spent yesterday fishing in Sheepshead Bay with Dad and taking way too many pictures of seagulls. I caught exactly the number of fish that you think I did.

Over on The Nest, my alternative uses for a simple stemless wine glass.

I don't usually keep or use miniature product samples - they feel like clutter to me - but liked the Archive Rosehip & Lavender Calming Body Lotion I found in my hotel room in Cape Cod so much that I've been carrying it everywhere in my purse, and now need to replace it with a full-size bottle.

Baby Bok Choy with Garlic Scapes

What are these crazy-looking things?!

They're very pretty and twisty, but I honestly had no idea what to make of them when I spotted them  at our local farmer's market last Saturday. It turns out that garlic scapes are a late spring/early-summer thing - they're the part of the garlic that grows above ground, and that gets harvested so that the bulb below can mature more fully.

What do they taste like? Garlic. Except lighter and fresher and milder, so you can use lots of them.

How to use them? Apparently pretty much any way you'd use the regular stuff, but the subtle flavor means they're extremely versatile: people pickle them, make them into pesto, blend them with white beans to make crostini, add them to soups and pastas, and even eat the younger (milder) ones raw.

For Those Extra-Lazy Evenings

These are so delicious.

They’re also my favorite Simple Skincare product right now, for two reasons:

1. Warmer weather means more sweat and general buildup, so they’re great additions to my purse on especially hot days (and are gentle enough to use on my son’s sweaty little self, as well).

2. After 9:30PM rolls around, I become horrifyingly lazy and need to catapult myself directly into bed.

Right There On The Shelf

Once there was a 1. The 1 met a 2 and the 2 met a 3. Everyone thought they were weird people.

One day the 2 said, "This is not fair." The 1 said to 2, "People, you are not being fair to us." 2 said, "1 is right. We have to be what we are born to be."

There was a meeting, all the people said sorry. And the numbers lived happily ever after.

The End.

Hiking Gear

Not really.

But the path near our house also isn't really a "hike" - more like an amble - so that's OK.

Let's talk about vests for a second. I never understood (or wore) vests until recently; I didn't really get the point. They seemed fussy, and extraneous, and whenever I was wearing one I felt like Vest Girl. Like if a friend were describing me to someone I'd met briefly at a party they'd be like, "Remember the girl in the vest? Her."

Weekend Snapshots

Our friend Matt is visiting from Ohio this weekend, so we spent a couple of days alternating between hanging out in the backyard and doing Best Of Our Town tours. Farmer's Markets to pick up stuff for dinner, nature walks by the lake, waterfalls, cobblestones...that kind of thing.
