Our Wedding (In Three Minutes)
I've been meaning to share this (obviously rather old) video for awhile now - and was reminded of it last weekend, when Kendrick's college friends sang at a wedding that we attended. I just love these guys, and think it's so cool that they always perform at big events in each others' lives; the moment when they sang at our ceremony (at around 1:32 in the video) was one of the best moments of my life.
We didn't have an actual videographer - this video was taken by a family friend on a point-and-shoot camera - but I love it even more because it's not polished and perfect; it's just exactly how it was. (There's a longer version as well, but I thought I'd post something a little more bite-sized.)
Happy Friday; hope you have a lovely weekend!
Lost In Translation
In the fall of my junior year of college my roommate and I decided that we wanted to have an adventure.
We found a pair of cheap tickets to Grand Cayman Island, and asked a British scuba instructor whom I'd briefly dated if he wouldn't mind if we stayed with him and his roommates for a few days. Fun, right? Well, as it turned out, something had very majorly been lost in translation during our phone conversations to plan the trip, because when we arrived we discovered that British Scuba Instructor was very seriously not interested in me, in having two girls staying with him for a few days, or in speaking or smiling. Ever.
Now, that would ordinarily be the kind of situation where one goes and finds a hotel room, but the plane tickets had pretty much tapped us out, so we just figured we'd stay out of his way and hang out on the beach as much as possible. Except it then poured rain almost the entire time we were there, making that a little tricky. Oh yes, and it was freezing.
So it wasn't the best vacation I've ever had. Except for one night, when one of the scuba instructor's roommates took pity on the sad, damp American girls and took us with her to some kind of annual Pirate festival. I put a bandanna on my head and long striped socks with the feet cut out of them on my arms (because that seemed pirate-y), and we ignored the rain and ran around the streets laughing for a few hours, forgetting about the scuba guy and school and everything, really. We went back to reality a couple of days later...but for that one night, forgetting was nice.

Alright, Let’s Talk Shapewear
Wearing head-to-toe @tjmaxx for today's @bettertvshow shoot!
Or...at least the pieces you can see are all T.J.Maxx. There's another piece that I'm wearing in this picture that you can't see, and we need to talk about it.
I've never worn shapewear before in my life, and this is for two reasons:
1. I tend to dress in a way (I like to call it "potato sack chic") that more or less hides my "eh" spots (the muffins, basically);
Step Away From The Scrub
My husband isn't a big face-products guy. I've tried to convince him that moisturizing actually just feels really nice and doesn't need to result in him smelling like a mango, but still: no.
Remember when I said a few weeks ago that the Simple Sense tool had recommended that I amp up my exfoliation efforts, and that my plan was to pick up Simple Skincare's Smoothing Facial Scrub and put it right there on the sink next to my toothbrush so that I would a) remember to exfoliate in the first place and b) be able to cleanse and exfoliate in a single step? Well, I happen to already know that I like this product and that it's a great way to get your exfoliating and cleansing done all at once. I know this because I used to have a full tube of the stuff sitting right there on my sink, all ready to go.
And my husband used the whole thing.
New Uses For An Old Thing: Cake Plate
Cake plates are one of those things that are just so fun to collect: I’ve found them at thrift stores and flea markets, and even dyed a clear cake plate red to make my own Depression Glass as part of a JITH episode. But, as we know, I’m also fairly terrible at cake-baking…and so that raises the question: what to do with all those pretty plates?
This cake plate (discovered a couple of weeks ago at T.J.Maxx) was too cute not to play with.
Garden Decor: A simple white cake plate topped with mismatched candles makes an unusual - and atmospheric - addition to your backyard.
The Tenuousness Of Things
Yesterday morning, right after putting up this post, I received an email from a reader that rang so true that it had me in tears.
That's it - and that's it exactly. There have been times (long times, many times) in my life when I have felt so lost and so helpless to achieve anything close to what I felt that I was capable of achieving, and times (long times, many times) when I have felt so alone and have wanted so intensely to find love and my future family. And what is happening in my life now...it's not that I feel like I don't deserve it, exactly - I work hard, I think I'm good at the stuff that I do - but I also feel so grateful for it. I hate the word "blessed" - hate that it connotes some kind of specialness that makes you more deserving than anyone else, and that is most certainly not the case - so I'll just call how I feel "lucky". I feel so lucky right now.
And I also feel so aware every single second that it could go away.
DKNY x Ramshackle Glam At Bloomingdales
I look extremely serious here.
I wasn't, I promise; while co-hosting last night's DKNY show at Bloomingdales I was exactly the goofball you would expect, and sort of exclaimed "Ooh! Favorite!" "No, that's my favorite!" "Oops - favorite!" every time a new piece came down the runway.
I had a lot of favorites.
