ENTREES

Green Chile Cheese Enchiladas

When I was a little girl I read all the time, and I mean that literally: I read while eating, on the bus to and from school every day, and even while walking down the street (some minor collisions were involved). One summer, I read the entirety of The Mists Of Avalon while seated on the back of my mom's Yamaha on a ride to Canada and back; I can't even imagine what the people who passed us on the highway thought (probably that my parents shouldn't let me read on the back of a motorcycle).

Anyway, I was a big reader. And some of my all-time favorite books during my formative years were - of course - the Judy Blume books (Starring Sally J. Freedman As Herself remains my personal favorite). It's always fun to revisit the stories that shaped our childhoods, and in just a few days Tiger Eyes - the story of a young girl attempting to cope with the murder of her father - will be released on film.

In celebration of the release Lawrence Blume, the director of the film and Judy's son (and my friend), sent me this recipe straight from the Blume kitchen to try out for myself.

My Looks

One Shirt, Three Ways: Black And White (Sort Of) Tie-Dye

You know this orange blouse? It ended up being one of those pieces that I didn't necessarily expect to wear constantly - I mean, it's really orange - but the shape was so great (relaxed with a gold zipper neckline detail) that I found myself reaching for it over and over and over. And when you find a wearable piece in a silhouette that you love, my general rule is that you should pick up more than one; the things that you really wear are the things that are worth investing in (especially when they're priced so well that they're not really an investment at all).

So: black and white it was.

Three ways I've been wearing this (sort of) tie-dyed blouse:

Lust Or Less: Perfect Sunglasses

I really enjoy an excellent pair of sunglasses. It's the one thing I insist on having with me each and every time I leave the house; there's nothing like a great pair to make you instantly feel (relatively) pulled-together, even if you're just running to the supermarket in pajama pants and an old sweatshirt. I'm also a semi-exhausted person generally, and sunglasses hide tired eyes, so there's that.

I'm also a little picky about the shape of my sunglasses; this is one place where I really enjoy keeping up with the trends. A couple of months ago I was into simple round frames; a few months before that it was the bigger, the better; right now what I like is a largeish round lens with a small wingtip on the outer edges (like the pair I've been wearing constantly these past couple of weeks).

Stemless Wineglasses, Three Ways

Stemless wine glasses are one of those things that you should probably pick up whenever you find them for a great price (these were $6.99 for 4). They're just so useful.

Some of my favorite (non wine-inclusive) ways to call them into action:

Love

Into The Woods

The fact that Sunday felt more like a really beautiful day in October than almost-June stymied my plans to spend at least part of my birthday passed out in the sun at our local pool.

So we improvised with a walk through the woods.

Remember how I said way back when we were thinking of moving that one of the reasons I wanted to leave the city was because I wanted us to be able to go fishing not because it was a huge event involving rental cars and long drives, but just because that's what we feel like doing? This is exactly what I meant.

To get a chance to walk through any non-Central Park woods used to involve some fairly considerable planning, as well as a train or a car or a bus...or all three. And so I never did it. Ever.

Daily InstaGlam: At Sunset

How Sunday came to a close: watching the sun set by the bridge with my two best friends.

We walked back to our car along the path that runs next to the train tracks, explaining to Indy that that's where choo-choos go, and when the MetroNorth went by the guy driving leaned out the window, pointed at us, and honked the horn. Choo-choo, just like we'd said, just for him.

Best ending to a night ever.
