Me [to Virgil]: Why do you smell so BAD?!?! I give you baths EVERY. DAY.

Virgil: Because I have only existed for thirteen weeks.

Me: ...Right.

Well, look at who decided to become best friends overnight.

The Virgil/Lucy integration hasn’t been smooth sailing all the way through, but it has been progressing in a steadily positive direction. We didn’t ease them into it too gently, though - we pretty much judged that neither of them was a danger to the other (Lucy is wary enough of strange dogs that we figured she wouldn’t be rambunctious enough to put Virgil in any danger, and Virgil had a hurt leg for the first couple of days that kept him quiet and prevented him from freaking out Lucy too much). There’s a minor…”attraction” issue at present, but hey, they’re already snuggled up on the couch snoozing, so we must have done something right.

Now, Lucy’s a relatively easy dog to get along with, though…so what if you’re bringing a new dog into a more potentially problematic situation?

Since I’m on a chatting-about-makeup kick, here’s another product that I absolutely love (thanks to Mama, who stuck it in my Christmas stocking): the Laura Mercier Baked Eyeshadow Palette. It can be used dry for a more natural look or wet to up the intensity…and is there anyone on the planet that these colors wouldn’t look good on?

Another Laura Mercier product that I keep in frequent rotation: the Tinted Moisturizer with SPF20 (wear this in the summer instead of foundation, or all year round if you don’t need much coverage).

Please do yourself a favor and pick up some Garrett County bacon (they have it at Whole Foods and other nicer markets). If you typically skew towards the Oscar Meyer stuff, I swear…you won’t even recognize what you’re eating, but you will eat a lot of it. It is expensive, but 100% worth it.

Also, reader Liz recommends the double-smoked bacon at Schaller & Weber, sold whole by the pound (you slice it yourself). The family-owned German meat shop is right near me, on 85th and Second Avenue, and I’ve been meaning to stop in ever since we moved.

My Makeup Routine

In recent days, I’ve been getting a bunch of inquiries about my makeup routine (most of them came after I published this New Year’s Eve photo, which is a pretty good example of how I do my makeup on a daily basis).

TIP OF THE DAY

From reader Jenny:

An easy way to remove candle wax from glass that you’d like to save: Cover an oven-proof dish with tin foil, turn the candle holder upside down on the foil, and stick into an oven set to low heat for a bit. The wax will melt and run onto the foil, and after a quick wash the glass container can be used for anything!

Alternative method: Just stick the container in the freezer for a bit, and the wax should chip right off. This doesn’t work for me every time, though…so it’s good to have both options available.

My lips are not doing well these days. They are chapped, peeling, and red, and are generally making me miserable. That thing up there, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15, is my savior when my lips get to the point of no return (and at $22.50 for a lip balm, you better believe I save it for emergency situations). It’s crazy expensive, but tastes wonderful and lemony and gives instant relief.

I am a bit of a lip balm fanatic, being as my lips take up about a third of my face, so here are some of my other top picks:

Aveeno Essential Moisture Lip Conditioner with SPF 15

Labello Classic Lip Balm (I also love the Velvet Rose formula)

I’m a grownup!

I’ve been lugging around my computer in my purse for years, only occasionally even slipping it into a protective sleeve (not smart, I know, I know), but the bag that I generally use ripped pretty irreparably, and so I have decided to graduate to an actual, for-real, big person computer bag. Speck, which makes products that I am a big fan of and have written about before (their Pixelskin iPhone case is the only thing that keeps mine alive), made my day by sending over a neat-looking, slim, comfortable-to-carry TuckPack, and I now feel much more fancy and capable.
