Links & Love & Stuff

Look at this awesome package of San Francisco-themed loveliness that arrived from my friends at ShopStyle! It smells like HEAVEN ON TOAST, mostly I think because of that candle.

When I was a teenager it was all about Coach and Kate Spade, and I've been really fascinated by the changes that both brands have made in the years since - basically, they upped their price point and their cache and et cetera et cetera and basically elevated themselves out of the appealing-to-tweens market. Which makes this article about Michael Kors bags and the rabid desire for them from the 13-year-old set super interesting. (via The Cut)

Heirloom Tomato, Cucumber & Avocado Salad

Yay for easy, pretty salads that taste as good as they look.

This is the kind of dish that is all about the ingredients, so they really do have to be as good as you can get - and right now we're heading into prime farmer's market season...so: get them now. And then get them again next week. And then get them over and over until fall rolls around and you can no longer get them.

I probably make this salad with 90% off my spring and summertime meals; it's that good. (And it takes thirty seconds to make, which is nice, too.)

A Garden Party to Celebrate (And Say Good-Bye)

This weekend's party was beautiful to look at, but even more beautiful to be at.

You know, ever since I was a little girl I've gotten a bit teary every time a party comes to a close: once the food is eaten and the drinks are drunk and the candles are burning down and everyone’s gone and it’s just me and Kendrick puttering around, picking up discarded glasses and plates and wiping down countertops and floors, I look around and think wait.

Come back.

Major Restorative Moment: The New Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa

nexxus salon new york

Talk about a not-terrible way to spend an evening.

You may have noticed I’m a little hair-obsessed lately; I just love this new cut so much, and am especially excited about the fact that (so far, at least) it appears that if I keep my hair healthy I don’t really have to do a whole lot to it on a day-to-day basis (which is AWESOME, because hello: no time). So when given the opportunity to take a little field trip down to the Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa for a restorative hair treatment and styling…I mean:

Yes.

Blank Spaces

pack house for move

We're about halfway packed - my strategy is to do at least a couple of boxes every day - and about five weeks from the date of our departure (officially May 21st), and the house is starting to fill up with emptiness.

It's hard, watching these rooms that I put together so carefully - and loved so much - get broken down. Dust from the endless boxes getting dragged up from the basement is settling into the cracks along the sideboards; all the photos are wrapped up in plastic; we're eating meals off of the same four dishes every day, because they're the only ones left that I haven't packed. With each passing day, our house feels less like "our house," and more like a place we're staying in for the time being, before moving on to the next thing.

And not knowing what that "next thing" is - because we still don't* - makes it harder to let go of what we do know.

The Classic White Wine Spritzer (But Better)

white wine cocktail spritzer

For Sunday's afternoon garden party, I wanted to serve a light cocktail with a spring-y vibe, and decided on simple, kinda retro wine spritzers. Wine spritzers are something I associate with, like, ladies wearing shoulderpads sitting in a fancy restaurant in 1985, but for some reason they feel fresh again. Throwback-y.

And they are easy to make, and delicious, and lovely-looking, and there you go: perfect warm-weather cocktail.

Inked

I've clearly been having a bit of a body-modification thing these past few months. And so I thought it might be fun to do a roundup of all the tattoos, mostly because I love hearing the stories behind other people's (tell me yours, tell me yours!).

I don't know why I've never talked about most of my tattoos before - but I started thinking about this tonight, and I suspect the reason is that every time I start to write about them I get stuck. Not because I'm nervous to share my reasons for getting each one - I may not agree with those reasons anymore, but I'm a firm believer that the point of tattoos is not to be totally, all-in certain that THIS IS THE ONE, FOREVER, but rather to mark moments in time that meant something to you (and that's something you can never be sorry for doing). No, I think I've never talked much about them because some are easy to explain, but others? I'm not confident that I can convey why I chose to put those marks on my body. Not well enough, anyway. And I don't want to render them trite, because to me they're not.

That's why art exists, after all: sometimes words just aren't enough.
