At The End Of The Ride

green gold painted chair

Six years ago, when my life changed, it started with a chair.

I've written here many times about the struggle that life in my late twenties was; how crushed I felt by the weight of just how much I had turned out to not be what I'd hoped to become. I was stuck in a job that I hated, in a life that felt millions of miles away from the life I'd dreamed of as a little girl, and there was a time - a long time, actually - when I couldn't see how any moment in the future could possibly bring with it something better. Or even something different.

And then, at a party late one night, I met a girl who did something called "blogging." I'd heard of blogging, sort of - I mean, I had a rough idea of what a blog was, had even started a hidden Blogger account documenting my worst dates (oh my god), and read Perez Hilton like it was my part-time job - but I certainly didn't know it was something that one could even consider doing for a living. And yet this girl seemed to, somehow...and at that moment I was so desperate for something to change that when she asked me to do an "audition" of sorts to become a contributor for her site, I said yes without a moment's hesitation.

How To Hide Your Growing-Out Bangs

I have this little problem, where every time I go through a major life change (such as, for example, baby-having), I cut off all my hair. Sometimes this is good, and sometimes this results in me doing something that makes life a little more difficult.

You know what makes life a little more difficult?

Bangs. Especially when the sky simply refuses to stop raining (stop, sky).

The Most Ridiculous (And Also Best) Purchase Ever

tom ford carrie sunglasses round

This is one of the most ridiculous – and also best – purchases I have ever made.

You've seen my favorite sunglasses (which I also own in white; like I said: ridiculous) before. Like, over and over. And then maybe you stopped seeing them these past few weeks, because somewhere in the middle of all this packing madness I lost them. Both of them.

I was extremely unhappy about this. Because they were unconscionably expensive (both of them), but also because I wear them every. single. day. I do not like existing in the outside world, where sunlight is direct and eyes are tired, without them. And even given those unconscionable prices, I was kind of like...Jeez. I guess I'm going to have to buy another pair. (Maybe not two, though, because I'm not crazy, and maybe used via eBay this time around.)

We All Chill Out

This photo was taken on Easter Sunday. I love that dress that Goldie is wearing, and was so excited to have her look all adorable and Easter-y when we went out to dinner with my parents that night.

Do you know what happened to that dress before anyone other than myself and Kendrick were able to look at her in it and appreciate said adorableness?

You don't want to know.

The Gift Of A Cozy (And Pretty) Night’s Sleep

There is never a time in my life that I do not want new pajamas.

Ever.

New pajamas are just kind of the best. And if you’re stuck on what to pick up for the mom in your life this Mother’s Day (or if you’d like to treat yourself), I’m going to go ahead and suggest:

Two Fresh Makeup Looks For Spring (As Modeled By Cara Delevingne Because Why Not)

Springtime = an excellent time for a makeup refresher.

What I love about the two looks below: they're on opposite ends of the spectrum - one is all smoky and sultry, and the other is light and rosy - but both are so fresh-looking, and so easy, and so great for the change of season...and I happen to have the perfect perfect perfect product recommendations for both of 'em, because they're both looks I do a lot myself.

So: let's talk makeup.

Life, From A Little Lower Down

A few days after my daughter was born, I was sitting outside by the pool with her, watching the light filtering down through the trees and listening to the sounds of Kendrick and Indy playing in the water, and I suddenly thought to myself how much I wanted her to remember that exact moment, even though I knew she never would. And so I set down my phone next to her head, pointed up towards the clouds and the trees and the scarf I'd draped across the top of her carrier, and I recorded a video. Just a few seconds of light and sound and sky, just so she could see what life looked like to her way back when.

Every so often, Indy will pick up my camera, and start taking photo after photo after photo, and I have this kneejerk impulse to stop him - no honey, you might break it, careful not to fill up the memory card, please don't mess around with mommy's things - and then I realize: wait.

How beautiful, to have this record of what life is like through his eyes.

My Looks

April Showers Bring…Overalls

I've always had a thing for overalls, but it's more of a thing in theory than an actual thing. It's just so damn hard to find a pair that looks like...you know, like you're intentionally wearing overalls as opposed to "oops I was painting my house and forgot to change before coming over for dinner." I have this one pair from ninth grade that I drag out every once in awhile, put on, and then usually take right off again because they sort of look like I made a mistake.

Yesterday's rain made me grumpy, but you know what made me less grumpy? The arrival at my home of the most perfect overalls everrrr. These are slim-fitting but not super-tight, are a little '70s without feeling costume-y, and have slightly cropped legs that help out enormously when you're confronted with those April showers (no wet hems, hooray!). They make quite the springtime uniform, I think.

Oh, and you know where I picked up the rest of the outfit, which completely coincidentally happens to be the same brand as the overalls? At the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale that's happening over on Fifth Avenue right now. (Seriously, it's a total coincidence; I wasn't trying to do Minkoff From Head To Toe, it just happened.) I try to make it every year, because it is so good - and a great place to pick up spectacular Christmas presents at a spectacular price. You can find sample bags and shoes for fifty bucks (!), and about halfway through the run of the sale they do huge markdowns. Just FYI. (You should go.)
