As the sun set over the Hudson Valley, I finally departed Fishkill Farms, perfect pumpkin in hand(s). Check back here in just a few days for my “Domestic Bliss with Jordan Reid” webcast on picking the perfect pumpkin.

BTW, see those awesome cowboy boots I’m wearing (my jeans are too long and are covering them, but you get the idea)? I bought those at a Salvation Army in Colorado during my freshman year of college, and pretty much glued them to my feet for six years straight (I have to treat them more delicately now that they’re getting on in years). There’s a switchblade mark in them from my stint as a bartender at Hogs ‘n’ Heifers (I promise I’ll tell that story one of these days). They’ve fallen completely apart and been rebuilt…I don’t know, four or five times. Some things you just can’t let go of.

Velvet t-shirt, Mossimo Supply Co. cardigan from Target, True Religion jeans, vintage, Cartier & MOMA necklaces, vintage boots.

When Megan and I arrived at Fishkill Farms we found…this amazing thing. See anyone familiar standing in for the cow?

(Yes, Julia’s Lilly spent the day with us in the country. Joyful times were had by all.)

So major shocker, I know: despite having in our possession an iPhone, a Blackberry, and a GPS system…we got lost. This is me asking for directions at Bob’s General Store, somewhere very far north of where we were supposed to be. (The friendly counterperson at Bob’s actually said regarding the farm stand we were searching for: “Oh, that place? You won’t find that place.”)

On Tuesday morning, Megan and I drove upstate in search of a farm stand where we could find a perfect pumpkin. After a few false starts and wrong turns (tow trucks and temperamental GPS systems were involved) we arrived at Fishkill Farms, which happens to be owned by the family of a good friend of Kendrick’s (I discovered this only when said friend came strolling across the pumpkin patch towards me).

There’s just nothing better than a crisp apple in October.

The best apples for eating: McIntosh (my favorite), Gala, Pink Lady, Red Delicious, Cameo, Braeburn, Cortland.

The best apples for baking: Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Gala, Braeburn, Cortland, Winesap.

How To Paint Furniture

I’ve been buying furniture on the cheap and painting it myself for years for two reasons: 1) I have no money to buy new furniture, and 2) I’m generally looking for something very specific, which is tough in general, and especially so when your funds are limited.

I also painted an antique desk I bought off of CraigsList for $25 (remember to remove the drawers first when painting desks/dressers) and my parents’ old Crate & Barrel chair. I think Rachel Ashwell would be proud.

(I found those conch shells on the floor of the ocean in the Cayman Islands on my first scuba diving trip, when I was twelve years old. I think it’s illegal to take them back to the US now, but back then you could pay a duty for each shell you brought home. They’ve gotten sun-faded over the years, but are still some of my favorite decorative pieces.)
