Bright Eyes

This video, for Bright Eyes’ “First Day of My Life”, is so beautiful it makes my heart hurt.

Also, Stephen’s brother is in it (at :48).

When I studied abroad in London during my junior year of college, I made this Jamie Oliver salad…a lot. More nights than not, actually. It’s cheap, it’s satisfying, and it combines three things that I really, really love: potatoes, avocado, and lemon juice.

BOILED POTATO, AVOCADO & CRESS SALAD

Cut up peeled potatoes (new potatoes are best, but you can use any kind you like, really) into chunks and boil in salted water until tender.

Cut up an avocado as you like - slices or chunks are both fine.

Look what came in the mail today courtesy of Ms. De Laurentiis’ publisher! New cookbooks make me So. Happy. Also: Lord, that woman is gorgeous.

After a quick skim-through, here’s what I’m most excited to get to cookin’:

-Panini with Chocolate and Brie

-Crispy Smoked Mozzarella with Honey and Figs

I borrowed Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking from Stephen at 8PM on Saturday night, and had finished it by 11AM Sunday morning. Think I enjoyed it?

The book chronicles Fisher’s decidedly troubled life - painkiller addictions, manic-depression, and a friend who died in her bed, among other things - from childhood (she’s the daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds) to motherhood (the father of her daughter left her for another man). I only have one complaint: Fisher is clearly determined to laugh her troubles away (at the beginning of chapter 1, she declares, “If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable”), but to me the book, brave and forthcoming as it is, fails to really probe the depths of Fisher’s unusual life. It’s a quick, laugh-out-loud read, but Fisher, despite her claims that she is laying herself completely bare, still seems to be hiding behind a mask of humor.

I want to know more.

Um…can I come?

Also: doesn’t Julia look so beautiful and happy? See? Marshmallows do a body good.

Although I highly recommend campfires, you can make s’mores without one. Here’s how:

After Morgan and Tyler’s engagement party, I stopped by Stephen and Dave’s place (about ten paces South of our front door) to meet Dave’s cousin Jonathan (far left) and his friend John (far right), who’s a NS reader. I had one more green tomato in my refrigerator, and cooked it up for the boys.
