Oh, My Neck

Best creams for preventing signs of aging on the neck and chest

The neck/décolletage area is one of those spots you (or at least I) never think about…until you do. My standard approach to skincare in that particular area has been to apply moisturizer to my face, and then rub whatever’s left over on my hands onto my neck, but in the past couple of years I’ve noticed that it’s one of the spots where I’m starting to really show signs of aging. I wish I were one of those people who has religiously applied sunscreen and moisturizer from, like, infancy…but I’m not, alas. And now I have wrinkles, and sun spots, and it’s all kind of depressing.

Time to start paying attention to the spots that have fallen into wild neglect.

An Ode To The BMF

DIY onesie embroidery kit for new moms

Mother's Day is one of those holidays that, the second you give birth to a human being, becomes ENORMOUSLY important. Mostly because it means that you get to sleep in, and then maybe someone delivers you a mimosa.

(Seriously, this is a day that I look forward to all year long. F Christmas; I want breakfast in bed and I want it yesterday.)

Help! My Apartment Is A Cave

A gallery wall made out of vintage mirrors

You don't need windows to make a place feel airy

Jordan,

My boyfriend and I just moved into a new apartment, and it's so dark the apartment literally feels like it's halfway underground. (It's not. We checked, and double-checked.) We also just found out we're expecting, so our budget is this side of none. How can I add some light to the place without spending a ton of money? I like the cozy feel, but I also don't want to feel like I'm living underground since I'm going to be spending so much time at home. Help, please!

So Distressed

How to make your own distressed t-shirt

There is no need to pay a ton of money for a t-shirt like this, but if you want to you totally can.

Kendrick likes to make fun of me for the MySpace profile I had when we first met (which was also his first impression of me, because we met when I "friended" - or "liked"? How did MySpace work again? - his band, and he invited me to one of their concerts). In my "about me," I wrote about loving my dog and Kraft macaroni and cheese (obviously; both of these facts remain true), and also about how my favorite thing to wear was t-shirts so thin they were practically disintegrating. And oh, I get why he makes fun of me for this ("aren't I sex-ay? With my t-shirts that are practically disintegrating?"), but it's also...actually...true.

See, I'm extremely specific about t-shirt fabric weight; it's one of my things. If a shirt feels heavy in the slightest, I do not like wearing it. If, however, it is essentially a tissue, I will love it forever and ever and wear it until it grows holes, and then I will love it even more.

The glam camp mom bod sweatshirt

Click over to My Habit for an interview by Ranya Barrett in which I reveal all my habits: the (kind of) good, the (extremely) bad, and the ones that have to do with cheese (which is far too many of them) - plus fashion rules you should break, like, immediately, and a defining moment in my career that just happened.

Just picked up these striped shorts in preparation for summer and they are PERFECT - they hit at the most flattering spot on your waist, and are short without being too short. (Bought a similar-fitting pair in denim too because they're perfect and because 99% of my cutoffs have had the biscuit.)

I am OBSESSED with these DIY Onesie Embroidery Kits. They're so, so cute, and such a cool, unique gift for a mom-to-be or new mom.

Adventures With Babies

Baby on the back of a motorcycle

Me and my dad adventuring, circa 1982

You may have noticed that I do a lot of traveling with my kids. It's partially because our family and friends have become increasingly spread out, location-wise, over the years - but mostly because I think that these experiences aren't just "fun" (although they seriously are), they're hugely valuable. I grew up with parents who took me everywhere - usually on the back of a motorcycle, as you can see - and it helped me learn how to be flexible, how to get along in new situations and with new people, and how to look for adventure everywhere. I'm grateful that they gave me that, and it's a gift I want to give my own kids.

Anyway, I get tons of questions about this particular topic - namely how to do it without subjecting yourself to multiple consecutive hours of screaming and misery. It can be done, I promise. Today on The Scenic Route, I'm talking about all the big things that parents worry about when flying with a baby (everything from what to pack in the diaper bag to how to handle it when you can feel other passengers hating you), and revealing the one thing that will never occur to you to pack, and that you MUST.

Peenk

{ Floor Pillow | Tie-Dyed Leggings }

My mom once told me that pretty much the second she found out she was having a girl she effectively stopped shopping for herself, because baby girl clothing is just so much fun. And it's true. Little boy stuff isn't, like, not-fun; it's just not the explosion of adorableness that happens when you wander over to the little girl side of Baby Gap.

As an example: lately my son wants to wear "soft pants" only, and woe to the person who tries to put denim on his body. Shirts with buttons? I don't think so. My daughter, however, wanders through store aisles going "OOOH NEW SHOES!" "OOH PEENK!" ("pink," for those of you who don't speak toddler) and lunging for things like headbands with sparkly cat ears and tiny rainbow bracelets. At home, she wants to pretend to put on blush, and loves brushing my hair. She wants to own All The Baby Dolls; specifically, she wants to hold them and rock them and give them little kisses. She would like to wear all peenk, all the time, please. (This is not permitted because I can only handle so much, but I have relented when it comes to pink shoes, because when shoes are pink they go on her feet faster and everyone benefits.)
