Noah’s Art

noah's art joshua tree

I totally forgot to show you the last stop on our road trip - and I have to, because it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

When we were in Joshua Tree, we stayed at a gorgeous AirBnB way out in the desert, and when we were driving back to the main road we saw this crazy sort of art installation rising out of the sand, and pulled over to discover a full-on outdoor museum of "assemblage sculptures" - basically, pieces created using only found objects ("Noah" refers to Noah Purifoy, the museum's founder).

If you ever make it out that way: go, for real.

A Little Help Over Here?

(Kel, if you're wondering, is Kendrick's nickname - his dad made him that stool when he was little.)

Alright, so yesterday I showed you all those little things about our new place that I love...and now I'm going to show you a room that I very seriously do not like even a tiny bit.

Our bathroom.

Light Me Up

Now that's a good globe.

I promise, I'm not turning into Young House Love, Ramshackle Edition over here; I just literally have been doing nothing but working on our place for the past week, so...well, talking about home decor is what I've got.

The present object of my obsession: lighting. I'm working on a full remodel of the lighting situation in our house (by which I mean I having lights as opposed to having literally none and living in near-total darkness, because that's what was going on before). I'm shooting a before-and-after video so you can see the full extent of what we're doing, but in the meantime we need to talk about lighting fixtures.

Oh, Love

Needlepoint by my friend Erin

I loved our first house so much. I loved the leopard carpet, and the gold hinges, and the stone wall in the yard. The strange Greek myth wallpaper and the attic bookshelf. Mostly I loved that it was our first house.

When I started looking at places out here, I sort of resigned myself to the fact that we wouldn't find anything as sweet and charming or special as our little Tarrytown colonial; houses out here tend to be more of the all-one-level popcorn-ceiling ranch-style variety (until you get into the hills, when they become ridiculously gorgeous rustic cabin-type places, but are also, like, three million dollars per bedroom). I knew I'd love wherever we ended up, but I figured I'd love it because...I don't know, because of what we put into it. Not because of the house itself.

Road-Tripping With Kids: A Survival Guide

Q. Hi Jordan!

I was hoping you could do a post on keeping young kids happy/entertained in the car when you get a chance? We'll be driving from Rhode Island to North Carolina in a month with my 21-month old (and a surly cat, God help me) and I'm really nervous about it. We usually plan longer car trips around bedtime/naps, but that obviously won't be possible this time around.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

First BBQ (Sort Of)

For our first dinner in our new home, we thought we'd do a BBQ by the pool. Or, rather, in the pool, because those kids are ob. sessed. (As an aside, because the safety issues surrounding kids and pools clearly deserve mention - our approach this weekend was to have a serious talk with our son about pool safety, confirm that the gate around the pool was secure, and install a home security system that also chimes whenever the doors to the backyard open.)

The BBQ plan was slightly confounded by the fact that we don't actually own a grill yet (although we will as of 4PM today, when it gets delivered, so if you have any fun recipes pleeeeeease pass them on; I plan to cook outdoors every single night, all summer long and my grilling repertoire is pathetic), but I dug our old stovetop grill from our NYC apartment out of a box, and that did the job. Also I could totally have served my family old taco shells and they would have been perfectly happy, because: pool.

The Menu: Since first meals in new homes should be 1) simple to make (because most of our utensils are still MIA) and 2) WONDERFUL, I went with my all-time favorite summer menu; it's fast and easy and inexpensive and so, so (so) delicious.

…And Here We Are (Video)

We're heeeeeere! We're here we're here we're here.

I went a little MIA for the past three days because...well, because "busy" is a little bit of an understatement, but also because I didn't have Internet. But now I do, whee. So I'm back! Hi.

I love it here.

Magic Hour

You guys, I'm going to have to apologize in advance in the event that all of a sudden I turn into a total chakras-and-crystals person, because I don't know who it is that is in these photographs, but the Jordan that I know does not decide to spontaneously break into yoga poses while watching the sunset barefoot in the sand.

Or...jeez, I don't know. Maybe she does.

Sunrise And Sand And The Shorts I’m Sick Of Wearing

You know what I've been wearing for two solid weeks?

I mean, you totally do. (Or at least you do if you follow me on Instagram.) Let's just say fashion has not been a big part of my life for the past fourteen days.

Right now I'm sitting in a West Hollywood Airbnb with two children who are extremely confused about what time zone they're in and thus think it's an excellent idea to wake up around 5:15A.M. Which isn't ideal because Francesca and I went out last night to a Sunset strip bar with DIY sundaes on the menu (oh yes) and mom could use a little extra beauty sleep, but is also kind of nice because they're now both fed and settled down, and so I have a semi-peaceful hour to putter around on the computer before we get on the road.
