Holiday Travel Beauty Essentials

My skin is always a little trickier in the wintertime – on a 1 to 10 scale of dryness, I’m a six thousand – and when you add in travel on top of it, there’s some serious potential for disaster. You know when you get breakouts and dryness at the same time, and don’t really know how to handle either situation because the remedy for one issue only seems to make the other worse?

That.

But! It is totally handle-able, and the way to deal is to go for the gentlest possible skincare routine, one that lets your skin chill out and breathe and find its way back to normal. In the past, I’ve been an oh-I’ll-just-use-whatever-soap-is-in-the-hotel-room person, but no mas, because really: it’s just as easy to throw a few travel-friendly products in my bag so I can take my regular routine with me wherever I go.

Easy Storage Solution: Quilted Koala

I hate clutter. We know this.

But kids are basically little clutter machines (the ten bajagillion legos scattered throughout my household will be the death of me…and I mean that literally, because I step on them and slip on them and practically catapult down stairways because of them on a daily basis). I love having our attic space for my son to play in (and destroy), but we still need to keep an assortment of toys in the living room/dining room area of our house, because that's where we spend about 99% of our time.

But this? Is not okay with me.

A Safe (And Beautiful) Way To Block Out Bedroom Light

When we moved into our new house, our son finally (finally!) started sleeping through the night. And it was wonderful. Like, THE BEST THING EVER.

And then summer came along, and it stopped being wonderful, because guess what happened every morning around 5:30AM? The sun got up, and our son got up right along with it.

So we decided that something needed to be done, and installed blinds. Except they only dimmed the room; they didn’t actually darken it. We looked at traditional blackout curtains, but they were way too dorm-room-y for my taste. We ultimately decided on thick, dark-grey curtains, and those work – our son now sleeps past sunrise even in the summertime…but now we have Child Number Two in the house, and for our daughter’s bright, feminine, minty nursery, heavy, almost-black drapes just weren’t going to fly.

I wanted to keep it feeling light in there…but still wanted to be able to turn off the sun when a midday nap was in session.

The eBay 2014 Holiday Collective

Presenting the perfect stocking stuffer or Secret Santa present: a limited-edition collection of power banks featuring customized prints by designers including Badgley Mischka, Pamela Love and Thakoon. These little pods provide a power boost to iPhones, iPads, Androids and Blackberries, and are available exclusively on eBay at a fixed "Buy It Now" price of just $25, with all proceeds benefiting the CFDA.

My favorite designs are Pamela Love's and Thakoon's, but they're all beautiful. And practical. And perfectly priced. Love it.

(They go on sale starting tomorrow (November 20); click here to learn more and to sign up for an email reminder.)

The Holiday Hostess Basket

(Contrary to what this image may suggest, I actually recommend staying clothed when you visit people during the holidays.)

I’m a big believer in coming gift-in-hand to any and all holiday get-togethers – even if all you tote along is a bottle of wine (which no one will ever be sad to see), it lets your hosts know that you’re appreciative of the time and the effort they’ve put into the event, whether it’s a cocktail party or a week-long stay.

My general rule: tailor the size of the gift to the duration of your presence in their home. For a regular old dinner or cocktail party, a bottle of wine or a bottle of decent liquor is sufficient (assuming your hosts drink or are serving alcohol) – flowers force your hostess to stop whatever she’s doing and trim stems and find a vase.

My Looks

Black Crowe

When I emerged from our bedroom in this outfit Kendrick took one look at me and said "You look like a Black Crowe."

I'll take that as a compliment.

It's comprised of four pieces - jeans, boots, tunic, hat - that I wear so often that it's getting a little weird (that tunic, incidentally, is a maternity top that I swore up and down I'd keep wearing after the baby, and yep: totally have), and a cardigan that I've owned for three or four years but have never worn because it's just…a lot. I mean, it's big. And fuzzy. And kind of oddly fancy. And not especially appropriate when there is a really excellent chance that someone will vomit on me over the course of any given day.

Lust Object: Deepa Gurnani Jewelry (And Headpieces)

I'm actually not really one for statement necklaces or big, spangly earrings - I tend to go for piled-on bracelets and rings - but for Deepa Gurnani's line, I'd make an exception. The detailed necklaces with unique color combinations are spectacular…but even better, maybe, are the headbands: they're more fancy than festival, and would be the perfect foil for a simple dress this holiday season.

Oh, yes: and these? Are earmuffs.

Are they warm? I have no idea. But "warm" seems kind of besides the point in this case.
