My Girls

Every once in awhile, you need a good Girls Day Out.

Where Francesca, Goldie and I went for our first just-us-three day (of many, many more to come, since Francesca lives in Los Angeles and, in a few months, will be just a car ride - albeit a rather long one - away from us): to The Village Social in Mount Kisco for a late lunch and to TJ Maxx for obnoxiously bright sweaters, and then for a walk in the woods because there aren't many days like this left in 2014.

Whenever I hang out with Francesca I'm inspired to dress…well, better. Or at least simpler. Even when we're just laying around the house, she's always so effortless and lovely that it makes me want to embrace a similarly less-is-more mentality. And these kinds of easy, timeless pieces - a white knit turtleneck, black jeans, a great felt hat - are actually what I've been gravitating towards for a few months now; when life is extra-busy, it's nice to have things that you can just pull out of your closet and know will look good wherever the day takes you.

The orangest sweater in the whole wide world is now my favoritest sweater in the whole wide world (Ralph Lauren, from TJMaxx; I saw a bunch there so run run run if you, too, enjoy looking like a citrus fruit). In related news, I would like Francesca to come live with me and photobomb all of my Instagram pictures, please.

This slideshow of what really happens during a baby's first hour of life is so cool.

48 Hours In Miami

YASSSS.

OK, so I've been to South Beach once before - on a trip to the Yacht Show to film a bunch of BetterTV segments - but this is the first time I've been there and had enough free time to actually wander around and see the place. I had no idea that it is essentially Cancun with slightly (only slightly) less nudity, but there you go.

Before we move on, I need to ask: what are those goblet-drinks with two overturned beers in them all about? Do the beers…leak out into the margarita part? I don't think I understand the physics. Or why one would not just consume these drinks separately, but hey: not judging; the people I saw drinking them looked like they were having quite a lot of fun.

Cotton 24 Hour Runway Show

Not too terrible of a location for a runway show.

OK, so Cotton's 24-Hour Runway Show (you can see the highlights here) was SUPER cool. I'm not sure if you realized this, but the 24-hour thing wasn't an exaggeration: the event went from 8PM Friday to 8PM Saturday, and there were literally models walking the runway at 3AM. I mean…I can't testify to that myself, because I was basically comatose (all alone in a very large hotel bed, yesssss), but it was live-streaming the whole time, and even ended up setting a Guinness World Record for longest runway show.

Ohmygoodness I Like It Here

Miami has been a total whirlwind so far, and I'll be posting more shots from the weekend on Monday, but in the meantime, can I just say?

This is my kind of nightcap. (There is a Pinkberry five feet from the front door of my hotel, and it pretty much made my life last night when I got home from Cotton's 24-Hour Runway Show - which is still happening, by the way. I'm heading back right now, and you can check it out here; it's streaming live until 8PM tonight.)

Beyond Basic Travel

You may have noticed that we’re pretty big on family trips.

As difficult as traveling with a toddler and an infant in tow can be, it’s one of our all-time favorite things to do, because sure, when kids are involved you have to be flexible, and sure, sometimes things may not go as planned…but those are the best parts: those unplanned detours and wrong turns down dusty roads so often end up being the moments you remember most of all. It’s not about staying in fancy hotels or eating expensive meals or planning out the ‘perfect’ itinerary…it’s about taking your family on adventures that are unique to you, creating the kinds of experiences that your kids (and you) will remember forever.

But getting it together to plan family trips isn’t always easy. You mean to book that special vacation that you’ve always dreamed of going on, but then the months fly by and all of a sudden the time when you could have gone is past. You want to try out a new destination, but it’s so much easier to just head back to that same town and that same hotel you’ve always gone to. You tell yourself that this is the year you’ll have that experience you’ve always dreamed of, but then just…don’t. Because it’s easier to do what you know.

Textured

Everyone knows that the way to handle the changing seasons is by wearing layers: a tank under a cardigan under a vest topped with a jacket and a scarf, and you’re ready for whatever the weather can throw at you. But layering isn’t just a practical approach to temperature ups and downs; it’s also a fun way to add a little extra color and pattern to your favorite basics.

A trick for adding some interest to your look while keeping your legs warm and toasty: top a pair of black opaque tights with knee-high socks…and then layer a pair of patterned ankle socks on top of everything. (Just make sure that the rest of your outfit doesn’t fight with the print on your socks; a good rule of thumb is to make sure all the patterns that you have on are in the same basic color palette but are different sizes: small polka dots and big checks, for example.)

Warmest Winter

My mom will be so proud of this post.

Because I finally - finally! - own a practical winter jacket.

What finally broke me: the fact that the puffiness is so slimmed-down that it's just as flattering as a less-practical style, and that it's simultaneously classic and sort of retro-feeling. Oh: and the (faux) fur hood. That broke me, too.

So Tell Me…

Too '90s…or just 90's enough? (At @tjmaxx; photobombs by Goldie and @francescavxo.)

For real, I'm in need of an opinion here…because I didn't pick it up on yesterday's accidental shopping spree, but I'm thinking I may need to make a return trip. Y/N?
