Run, Run, Run

I'm not a huge runner; we know this. But this weather…it makes me want to at least pretend to be. Right down the street from our house is a woody trail that wraps around a lake, and it's so beautiful and peaceful at this time of year that I actually crave getting out there with a pair of sneakers, a pair of headphones, and perhaps Virgil (Lucy, as you can probably imagine, isn't exactly the athletic type).

This is very weird for me. But it feels so good.

Now, full disclosure, lest you think I've gone and replaced Jordan with some kind of Exercise Bot: When it comes to running, I max out at about 20 minutes and usually don't even hit that…but it's not really the length of time that I spend running that matters to me; it's how even a short jog makes me feel.

My Girl

Something that's so different about Number Two (for me, at least):

With my son, I felt so panicky all the time when he was little (and as he grew bigger): stay just the same, don't grow up, stay stay stay. But what watching him get older has taught me is that it's so cool, seeing your children turn into the people they are. I love her just like this, tiny and curled up in the crook of my arm…but I can't wait to see who she'll be.

Style

Boots and boots and boots

Citybound in Ann Taylor jacket; Nine West boots. (I am aware I own too many purses.)

I forgot I owned these boots. I bought them at Nine West years ago, when we still lived in the city, and wore them into the ground, and then they went into our attic one summer and disappeared behind a box, only to be rediscovered when I was clearing stuff out for our yard sale.

My Looks

Got My Walking Shoes On

No, totally kidding. These are not walking shoes. They are, however, FABULOUS shoes, and that is what a pair of flats tucked into your purse for the train ride home (when your feet have had the biscuit, so to speak) are for. (These foldable flats, by the way, are really great.)

For the final day of my turn hosting Kipling's Always On launch at Grand Central, I went for the kind of outfit you can really only wear when the temperature is just right: warm enough for shorts without tights, cold enough to make thigh-high boots not look ridiculous (or at least not more ridiculous than they already do; and of course I mean that in a good way), a floaty blouse, and no jacket because we haven't quiiiite arrived at jacket-wearing weather yet.

And because there's no reason to wear one bag when you can wear two, I carried a grey tote for all my stuff (camera, iPad, the aforementioned flat shoes), and tucked a burgundy crossbody (best color? best color) inside for apres-event activities…which, if we're going to be honest here, consisted of a slice of Two Boots, a large sangria in a to-go cup and an US Weekly, but that sounds like a party to me.

Get A Taste Of Your Dream Life

See the happy faces in that photo? That pretty much sums up how I feel about the surprise I have for you today.

I am SO EXCITED.

OK, so whenever we take a long car trip with our kids, I start out sitting in the front like a normal person, but within minutes I end up wedged into the teeny, tiny space in between their two car seats, distributing pacifiers and sippy cups and toys, my purse crushed under my feet and an action figure stabbing its plastic sword into the small of my back. And at some point during these rides, I always fall into a daydream: our car has been replaced by a gorgeous (and huge) RV with a refrigerator and a breakfast table and a bed covered in a big, colorful quilt, and instead of sitting in traffic on I-95 we're driving along Route 66, stopping to buy dreamcatchers and eat BBQ and pulling over to the side of the road at night to stare up at the wide-open, star-filled sky.

My Looks

The Silhouette Less Traveled

I have a silhouette.

That sounds sort of fashionista-y and maybe a little obnoxious, but it's true: there is a shape that I like my clothing to be, and so that's what I wear. Pretty much all the time, to the near-total exclusion of other silhouettes. It consists of a slouchy top half and a basically nonexistent or very slim-fitting bottom half, and for whatever reason it's how I feel physically comfortable and most like myself.

Like that plaid dress up there, which is actually a shirt (but we won't talk about that): loose up top, nonexistent down below, and there you go: happy me.

Birthdays Around Nowadays

Our family doesn't have too many traditions surrounding birthdays - we mostly just figure out what sounds fun to do that day, and then do that - but we do have one rule:

When it is your birthday, you get to sleep in, and you get your favorite breakfast in bed.

Creating A Coffee Table Display (In The Real World)

I've seen those gorgeous "how to style your coffee table" tutorials, too. Thing is, I don't own a carefully curated selection of stunning art books. Any adorable little trinkets that I set out may or may not be immediately shattered. And I have sixty thousand remotes, all of which are apparently necessary to make our television function (whyyyy?).

So as lovely as those tutorials are, they do not apply to a life that contains far more toy cars than crystal candleholders.

Presenting: my kind of coffee table display.
