SF / Dim Sum

A touch soused from our Recession Specials, Megan and I wandered through Chinatown, where we sampled some dim sum and tasted freshly made fortune cookies at a fortune cookie factory.

I don’t know a whole lot about dim sum (all I know is that I like the pork buns). Anyone have any suggestions for next time?

My favorite of the day’s stops: Vesuvio Cafe, on Columbus Avenue, where Megan and I sampled the “Recession Special” (a beer and a shot for $4!). The decor at Vesuvio is absolutely jaw-dropping: kind of Wailea-meets-Woodstock, with wicker chairs, dusty chandeliers, and one totally awesome bartender.

Our choice of venue for lunch reflected our mood. The grilled ham and cheese sandwich was fine, the Bud Lights were better…and the company was spectacular.

(Let’s not even talk about our outfits - we planned on just heading out to grab coffee, and then ended up staying out for hours.)

My life is better for having discovered It’s Its (a “San Francisco Legend). Basically just different flavors of velvety ice cream sandwiched between perfectly chewy oatmeal cookies and covered with a thin layer of chocolate, these things (which I found both at a deli near Meghan’s and in the Facebook cafeteria) take ice cream sandwiches to a whole other level. I tried Cappuccino, but Meghan and Randi tell me that Mint is to-die-for.

To make your own version, just sandwich some slightly softened ice cream (I think Starbucks Java Chip would be particularly delicious)  between two oatmeal cookies, cover in foil, and freeze for at least six hours.

You can also go here to learn how to find a retailer near you, or go here to get them FedExed straight to your home (a good idea, I promise).

When I was growing up, my parents had an enormous fresh-water fish tank in our living room. I’m definitely pet-ed out at the moment, but I still love this idea.

I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of getting a dog, but fear that my current schedule wouldn’t leave much time for its care.  So I started thinking about something much lower-maintenance and remembered my beloved beta fish, Theo, who managed to live through several years of college with me.
