Watching the sun just begin to rise over Sheepshead Bay.
Sheepshead Bay is a great spot for fishing; other good locations around the NYC area are City Island and Howard Beach.

Day Two of my weekend with Dad while our respective spouses are out of town.
6:30AM, aboard the Brooklyn VI in Sheepshead Bay. Dad grew up right across the street and has fond memories of fishing here with his grandfather. Despite the hour and the freezing weather, I was really looking forward to a father/daughter day on the water.
My purchase from Juan Rosado Antiques & Collectibles, in Cold Spring: a perfect-condition 1950s tablecloth for only $32! I am not a huge fan of our Formica dining room table (which came with the apartment), and think this is a perfect fix, as well as a nice alternative to the lace tablecloth our table usually sports.
(Kendrick bought me those lavender roses the other night when he got home from the studio at 3AM, just so they’d be there when I woke up. Heart flutter.)
Congratulations to my cousin Tina, mama-to-be!!!
Lucy and I at the scenic overlook just outside of Cold Spring - such a beautiful day (if a touch windy).
Other great day trips from NYC:
Chester, New Jersey. My family and I have a tradition of visiting this town every year for some Christmas shopping in the antique stores…and also to eat scones and cucumber-cream cheese sandwiches at Sally Lunn’s.
Sleepy Hollow. Yes, the setting of Washington Irving’s famous story. Also a totally charming little village with some beautiful architecture.
My dad, the master photographer (he really is very good), at a scenic overlook on the Hudson River.
My very California-in-the-’50s lunch - a halved avocado filled with chicken salad. I had to order it, because it just seemed like such a kitschy (and delicious) menu item. It was good, but I would have left the peppers out of the chicken salad (I kind of hate peppers).
CHICKEN SALAD, MY WAY
Boil 2 large chicken breasts for about 20 minutes in approximately 6 cups of boiling water with 1 packet of chicken bouillon added to water; cut cooked chicken into chunks.
In a large bowl, mix together chicken with 1/2 cup mayonnaise (more or less, depending on your taste), 1/2 cup diced celery, a small handful of finely chopped purple onion, a squeeze of lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.
We stopped into Juan Rosado’s Antiques & Collectibles on Main Street in Cold Spring, which had an incredible selection of Jadite kitchenware (opaque pale-green glass from the 1940s), as well as gorgeous, delicate teacups, oversized 1960s sunglasses, and to-die-for vintage tablecloths (I had to buy one).
Since Kendrick is in the studio all weekend and Mom is in Canada with our family for Canadian Thanksgiving, which is Monday (I am so sad I couldn’t join her, but flights were just way too expensive), Dad and I are spending Saturday and Sunday together.
Saturday morning, we decided to head upstate to Cold Spring (we took the car instead of Dad’s motorcycle so that Lucy could come with). The leaves are turning already, which is so beautiful, and also a little sad. This is without a doubt my favorite time of year.
Cold Spring is a perfect day trip from NYC, as it’s close (about an hour out of the city), and full of relatively affordable antique shops and great little cafes.
Megan and I at the Origins/CouponCraze.com/Gettington.com Makeunder event in Soho on Thursday night.
French Connection sweater.
Event attendance was uncompensated, but product samples were generously provided.
